Dr. Randy F. Huffines is recognized as one of the country’s leading experts on aging and oral health. He is a frequent speaker at meetings such as the Hinman, Chicago Midwinter, Academy of General Dentistry, Pacific Dental, Yankee Dental, California Dental, Texas Dental, and 10 out of the last 11 Annual Sessions of the American Dental Association. He is known for his ability to take complex oral health issues and translate them into easy-to-understand concepts and practical techniques the entire dental team can use immediately with their patients. Dr. Huffines is one of only a handful of practicing clinicians in the United States who has completed a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Geriatric Dentistry. For the past 25 years, he has treated older and medically complex adults in a traditional private practice, in hospitals, and in nursing homes. He is a Past President and a Fellow of the American Society for Geriatric Dentistry, Fellow of the American Association of Hospital Dentists, Diplomate of the American Board Special Care Dentistry, and Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, Scotland. In 1996, Dr. Huffines became the first Chair of the American National Standards Institute Task Force that became the American Dental Association’s Standards Committee on Dental Informatics. He serves as a consultant to the ADA’s Council on Access, Prevention and Interprofessional Relations. In 2004, he was appointed to the American Dental Association’s Elder Care Task Force. Dr. Huffines is also the National Coordinator of Geriatrics and Special Care Dentistry for the Department of Veteran’s Affairs. He holds faculty appointments in colleges of dentistry, medicine, nursing, and allied health sciences. Dr. Huffines has served on the editorial boards of two major dental drug references. He is a contributor to Cambridge University’s 2009 edition of Reichel’s Care of the Elderly. In spite of these responsibilities, Dr. Huffines spends most of his work week as a “wet-fingered” dentist providing comprehensive dental care to older and medically complex patients. This extensive practical experience is evident throughout his courses as he illustrates concepts with the patients he has personally treated.
